Fr. Joe says a need for QUANTUM CHANGE- " A ROAR OF AWAKENING

Fr. Joe took an input session on the ultimate change called the quantum change, the total transformation of the self, the conversion through the quantum energy. He also mentioned that even after recover in many there is only “no alcohol” yet the ultimate transformation is absent. Hence he urged the clients to go through the process of analyzing the mystery of transformation.
He explained that a person in this world suffers with lot of discrepancies and conflicts in life. There is a clash between the real self and ideal self, what we want to be and what we are doing actually do not match. And realization of this conflict opens the portals of ultimate change.
While uncovering the real self ,one sees that the self is made up of Terminal values, the core values of a being, such as need for personal comfort (which includes pleasure too), peace (both inner and outer), freedom, understanding God’s will (so as to know why one has come to exist in this world. These core values define one’s instrumental values, those values by which we operate in this world, which includes our ambitions, our realm of freedom and forgiveness, our obedience and contentment with ourselves.
These instrumental values in turn define our attitudes, beliefs and emotions. And thus is made “self”. But when our core values clash with our behavior, our overt actions, we face a conflict, a discrepancy, hence becoming uneasy, restless in life. Thus, one gets on the “rock bottom” of life and this leads to the total conversion. The realization comes through an “AHA” experience, the eureka of this operation!!
Thus, there comes the congruence between the idea self and the real self and the human being is complete. A transformed human being is the one who is in touch with his real self and is aware of the essence & the purpose of his existence.
Father Joe explained the ways to discover this path of transformation and to hold on to it for good. He emphasized that one needs to explore his subconscious and unconscious because everything in one’s life has its roots & rituals. One who is able to explore his unconscious is able to know the “whys” of his behavior and actions.
He also drove home the fact that one has to learn to live in the present, the here and now of one’s life so that one makes the best of it instead of cribbing about the “by-gone” and worrying about the unknown future.
He emphasized on striking a balance between the “science and faith” and said that one who follows the rational thinking with faith has the potential for the quantum change.
Thus for everyone and for others in general, it is important to become this instrument of change, because, when one develops a positive self, the whole world becomes positive for him, as it is about giving that one receives, it is about dying that one lives…dying for everything…and living beyond anything.
Father Joe’s lecture was also backed by various stories and anecdotes about life which added the tinge of motivation and interest to it. The lecture also had a hue of various theories and philosophies which took the lecture beyond spirituality, beyond science….but above all A NEW TRANSFORMED LIFE.

Hussain bhai, one of the oldest and popular member of the AA group in Mumbai and the seniormost counsellor of Kripa passed away on the eve of 31st December, 2011. As we celebrated the new year, the news of his death due to prolonged illness shook us all up. His very affable and jovial self had touched the lives of thousands of recovering alcoholics and their families over the years. He demonstrated the energy of a young soul not just in his approach towards life but also the regular activities he involved himself to spread the message of Kripa Foundation and the AA fellowship in the society.He famous words were " Sobriety is like a wrestler with a well oiled body difficult to maintain at times, but not impossible to stay sober". He always was in gratitude to Fr. Joe for all the good that Fr. Joe had done for him.The most touching farewell to Hussain Bhai was to see Fr. Joe pray with three other Muslim clerics at his funeral. At any instance he would promptly and proudly tell you the number of years, months, days that he has been sober, and as he breathed his last he proudly held on to his biggest achievement, his sobriety,even a few hours before he passed away, he was helping some into recovery.

Sad demise of Mervin from Kripa Mangalore

Mr. Mervin Sequeira a senor counselor with Kripa Mangalore expired after a prolonged illness on the 14th of January 2012. He was well respected by clients in his counselling skills to patients with his soft spokeness and kindness. Mervin was liked by one and all. Even during his treatment at Mumbai he was taken care of with much love and concern for him. It was a joy to see him dance away to his heart content at Fr. Joe's birthday, even though he was very ill. He is survived by his wife Irene and daughter Mariam.

Many in the congregation our people of different faith. A heart rendering experience was to witness Fr. Joe call upon a Muslim by faith and share the prayer of Peace on the ocassion of the feast of Eid Millat.At the end of the mass, the recessional hymn was sung by Fr. Joe in German and Konkani languages.

Awareness program at Chetna College, Bandra, Mumbai

An awareness program on Addiction was conducted at Chetna college, Bandra (E), Mumbai for about 300 students.The program consisted of a testimony by a client of Kripa,orientation of the disease by staff of Kripa Kirk Albuquerque and a skit based on addiction was held on the play grounds of the college, much witnessed by many students.
Present at the outreach were the Principal of the college Mr. Pravin Devasthali, CA Shrinivas Joshi- Chairman of WIRCA, CA Shardul Shah WIRCA, staff of Kripa Bandra Simon Mathew and Laxmi Rani Shah.
Newsletters of Kripa were distributed to all present at the function. The students appreciated the outreach program.

Joe in his address thanked Fr. William for his love agape and stated that he was very touched by the Parish fathers love and affection to the patients and staff of kripa Bandra extended throughout the whole year. A pleasant surprise was a visit by Charmiane and Glen children of Late Harry D founder of AA in India, along with Chairman of GSO India Mr. Bhalla . The patients were very touched to see Fr. Christmas Party 2011
The Children’s party from orphanages situated in and around the Vasai region was held on 27th December 2011. The event began with the celebration of Holy Eucharist led by Fr. Joe Pereira. His Grace Archbishop Felix Machado graced the occasion with his presence. Around 500 children and more than 150 guests and well-wishers attended the program.
Archbishop Felix Machado addressed the children and commended the work that Fr. Joe was doing through Kripa Foundation. Fr. Joe along with Archbishop Felix Machado invited the youngest children from all the ashrams to come forward and cut the cake.
Santa Claus also made an appearance much to the delight of all the children. A number of entertainment programs were organized which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Thereafter the children were invited to the patio and both staff and children shook a leg or two. A sumptuous dinner was served to all present. The programme ended with gift bags being presented to all the children

A 3 hour training program was conducted by Ms. kalpana Parekh, Psychologist/Trainer from New York fir the staff of Kripa Dharavi and Bandra on 9th December'11.The training was on counselling clients, seeking admission, Clients in treatment and Clients counseling after discharged. EAP (Employee Assistance Programs) and Family support and care counseling was also included.

Fr. Joe shared his valuable inputs on how meditation and the essence of spirituality could empower the counselor more strongly to bring about a more positive result in their counseling sessions.

Dr. Eustace D'Mello, Dr Mehta, Ms. kavita who takes the Family System meetings and AA members, were also present along with the staff.

The training was very interactive and informative to the staff. Proposed to replicate the training in other centres.

Joe H Pereira and 4 other priests from different dioceses of India the "National Excellence Award" at their Colloquium on "Good Governance, Corruption and Citizenry" headed by Justice N Satosh Hegde on 30th November 2011 at Platinum Jubilee Hall Dolours' Basilica (Puthenpali). “Viva Queimada” a coffee table book by the author Mr. Neville Gomes, traces the 500-year journey of the East Indian community in Mumbai. The book was launched with an introduction through a theatrical performance, incorporating portions from the book which delves on East Indian Customs, their unique cuisine and the impact of colonialism on the community. It provided a brief character sketch of notable East Indians. The production conceived and directed by Etienne Coutinho included cast like Marianne d'cruz Aimen and Shahriyar Atai with music composed by Merlin D’Souza, while the costumes and props were designed by Darryl Loyola. The program was well compered by Jeffrey Goldberg.
Mr. Neville Gomes in his emotional filled speech mentioned that the book was a ”labour of love”. The idea of documenting the East Indian community's history first cropped up in 2008 when he was approached by friends with manuscripts and reference material. While Mr. Gomes was initially skeptical his wife Mrs. Sandra Gomes took a keen interest in the project. But when she passed away in 2009, Mr. Gomes decided to complete the book considering it a farewell tribute to his wife Mrs. Sandra Gomes.
From 2010 onwards, Mr. Gomes and his six member team travelled across the city, from Revdanda to Thane and Gorai, re-tracing the steps of the original inhabitants of the city. The quest also took them across the seven seas to the USA, Canada and Australia where they met up with the diaspora. The result is ” Viva Queimada ”, a coffee table book with 100 illustrations which documents the landmarks in East Indian history, from the 15th century till the 21st century. Along the way, readers also get a peek into the history of Mumbai which ran parallel to that of the community.
The book was officially released by Mr. Gerson da Cunha.Further in his speech Mr. Neville Gomes, mentioned that the cost of the book was Rs. 2500/- with limited edition which came along with an autograph of the author and a digital copy of ”Viva Queimada” costing Rs 10,000/-.Spontaneously Mr. Gomes generously declared all that the proceeds from the sale of the books would go to charitable institutes like Kripa Foundation, Ummeed and Women’s India Trust. "Viva Queimada" has a page exclusively on Fr. Joe
The program was well attended by prominent aide a la de creme of society from all over Mumbai, appreciative of the efforts of Mr. Neville Gomes and late Mrs. Sandra Gomes, taking back home with fond memories of days gone-by and carrying with them a book of history “VIVA QUEIMADA”

At the National Convention for CA students " BREAKING THE HABIT" held in Mumbai on the 25th of November 2011, Fr Joe was felicitated by Mr. S.Y Joshi Chairman of WIRC- ICAI. in the presence of over 500 students. delegates and office bearers of ICAI and WIRC and CA students Representatives.

CA S.Y. Joshi Chairman WIRC, welcomed Fr. Joe and mentioned that ICAI was proud to be associated with Kripa Foundation in spreading the awareness of addiction to the college students doing Chartered Accountancy. Mr. Joshi later falicitated Fr. Joe on behalf of WIRC-ICAI

In his address to the students Fr Joe explained how, the student sector of society were close to his heart, as they were the future of our country, and it was important for them to know the ill effects of addiction. He was happy to be associated with ICAI in spreading the message of awareness, on the harmfull effects of addiction in colleges.

CA Shradul Shah, Secretary WIRC, in his vote of thanks, explained to the students of the tie-up with Kripa,to have awareness programs in different colleges selected by WIRC.. These programs in colleges would commence immediately. A short video clip of Fr. Joe's work was screened at the auditorium.

Mr.Salman Khan inaugurates bus donated by Celebrate Bandra Trust to Kripa Foundation,Mumbai

Mr. Salman Khan the famous actor of Bollywood today inaugurated the bus given to Kripa Foundation by Celebrate Bandra trust. Earlier Fr. William Athaide the Parish priest of Mount Carmel Church, Bandra, blessed the bus in the the presence of Dignitaries, Trustees of Celebrate Bandra Trust, staff , clients and well wishers of Kripa Foundation. It was a delight to see the priest team of the parish at the function.

Mr Khan after inaugurating the bus mingled with the patient and in his speech spoke about the harmful effects of alcohol and drugs and mentioned how he too had some time in his life experienced its ill effects. The clients were very touched by his simplicity and his caring nature for them. Ms. Patricia Nath Trustee of Celebrate Bandra Trust mentioned that the bus donated could be used for a good cause in transporting the students to and fro schools and colleges to visit Kripa and could also be used for awareness programs, so as the future generation in and around Bandra could lead a drug and alcohol free life.

Fr. Joe signed the documents of handing over of the bus to Kripa along with Ms.Patricia Nath and Mr Arjun Chhabria Trustees of Celebrate Bandra Trust.

In his speech, Fr. Joe thanked the trustees of Celebrate Bandra Trust and mentioned that this bus would be used to the fullest in reaching out and educating the students from schools and colleges on the harmful effects of addiction and addiction related diseases like HIV/AIDS.

In his vote of thanks, Fr. Joe thanked each and every one gathered, for coming and gracing the occasion, including the press.

Refreshments and tea was served to the guest which was well organized by the staff and clients of Kripa Bandra. The program ended with singing of the National Anthem.

Recovering alcoholics including a priest, an ex- Merchant Navy captain and a former bartender talk about addiction

I’m Father Seraphinus Ekka, and I am an alcoholic,” confessed this 48- year- old priest in front of some 60- odd people, who had gathered to attend a seminar on the theme, ‘ Alcohol: A Bane To Workers’ over the weekend. Ekka and many like him have been battling the bottle for years now.

While many have fallen prey to alcohol addiction, others have managed to beat the bottle by joining rehabilitation centres and other self- help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous ( AA).

At an event organised by the Christian Workers’ Movement of Archdiocese of Bombay in association with Kripa Foundation, a non- profit organisation that rehabilitates drug addicts and alcoholics, a motley group of people had gathered at the Joseph Cardijn Technical School in Dadar ( E), to discuss various issues related to alcoholism. Said Father Joe Pereira, Founder and Managing Trustee of Kripa Foundation, “ Alcoholism is a disease, it is not a disorder. It is also known as a disease of relapse.

Addiction to alcohol not only affects the physical heath of the person, it also affects the health of the mind and the health of the soul.” As Pereira puts it, the first step towards recovery should be accepting the fact that one is an alcoholic. “ Only after one admits that he/ she is helpless in front of the bottle can the cleansing process start. Alcohol addiction is a form of disability and one has to learn to deal with it,” added Pereira. Agrees Ekka, who worked as a police inspector for two years in Lucknow before joining priesthood at the age of 25. “ There was drinking problem in my family so, I believe that my drinking habit is pretty much inherited and lies in my family.

Strangely, while working as a police inspector, I never touched alcohol. But as soon as I was ordained as a priest, I started drinking,” said Ekka, who was the principal of a college in Lucknow. Ekka’s drinking habit caught the attention of the parish where he was residing. “ I was transferred to another parish but nothing happened. I kept drinking. I hid bottles in my room to drink. I indulged in binge drinking. So for a week or so, I just kept drinking until my body could take it no longer. I was a priest and there was so much remorse that I did not have courage to face the Almighty,” said Ekka, currently based in Mumbai. After attending various rehab programs in Mangalore and in Mumbai, Ekka has been sober for almost two years now.

“ Helping addicts is now my mission.

That is the purpose of my life,” he said.

Problem Stephen Monteiro, a former captain in the Merchant Navy initially refused to come to terms with his addiction problem. “ I was in the merchant navy for 25 years. It all started at my workplace.

Every promotion was celebrated with drinks. Every evening, I would wait for the drinks to be served. But I did not become a drunkard then. I knew my responsibilities as a captain.

There was a fear of losing my job.

Hence, I would drink in moderation,” said Monteiro from Mazgaon. He got hooked to alcohol, when he came home for a few months. “ At home there was no restriction. I started with weekend drinking sessions. Then it came down to weekdays… then after dinner everyday… then dinner and lunch… then breakfast, dinner and lunch. Soon I needed alcohol for everything. If I was happy, I would drink. If I was sad, I would drink. Reason or no reason, I wanted alcohol. Things came to such a pass that I would keep a bottle below my bed. I would get up in the middle of the night and start drinking. When there would be no alcohol left at home, I would run to a nearby bar at 5: 30 am and ask the shopkeeper to pour me a drink. I remember a time, when I did not have enough energy, to even lift the glass. I begged the shopkeeper to pour the drink down my throat,” said a frail Monteiro. He joined Kripa foundation for a 90 day rehab course seven years ago. Since then, he has been sober and is currently working as a Centre Manager for Kripa Foundation in Bandra. What happens when he sees alcohol now? “ Oh, my mouth still waters,” he said.

Family Another speaker who narrated his story during the event was Bosco D’Souza from Bandra ( W).

D’Souza started working in a bar of a five- star hotel in Mumbai at the age of 17. “ I wanted to taste the liquor of the world. After I quit my job at the hotel, I joined a construction company. My job there was to entertain guests. I started drinking officially. Even before I realised, I turned into an alcoholic. My children, my wife, my parents, all of them suffered silently along with me,” said D’Souza. It was D’Souza’s sister who approached Kripa and got him enrolled for a rehab program.

“ I have been associated with Kripa for 19 years . As an addict, I have been through hell and I know what an alcoholic goes through,” said D’Souza, who now organises seminars for addicts and their families and informs them about alcoholism.

Help Since there are chances for alcoholics to relapse, a rehab program is not a permanent solution.

“ One should join a group like AA. From such groups, one should choose a ‘ sponsor’. A sponsor is a person, who will be there for you throughout your recovery process. You can call him any time of the day and share your problems. If you want to have a drink, you should immediately call up your sponsor and tell him about your craving.

He will keep you on the straight and narrow,” said D’Souza.

Alcohol addiction is also a growing problem especially among college students. “ Children as young as 16 come to rehab centres.

But, mostly it is the unemployed youth who fall prey to this ‘ disease’,” said D’Souza.

There could be several factors that can trigger addiction, at times there can be no reason at all. “ Just the fact that alcohol is easily available is the reason for addiction,” said D’Souza.

At the beginning of the seminar, Pereira had made a profound statement, “ Nobody understands the pain of an alcoholic and that’s why we’re here.” At the end of the event, the audience could not agree more with him.

A days seminar titled Alcohol- A Bane ot workers was conducted by Fr Joe and his team at Joseph Cardijn Technical School, Dadar Mumbai. The program commenced with the Eucharistic Celebration by Fr Joe and co-celebrant Fr. Seraphine. In his Key note address Fr. Joe spoke of the ill effects of alcohol and chemical dependency and how Kripa could help the Christian Workers Movement by reaching out to those suffering from addiction all over the country,as Kripa has its presence in many Archdioceses of India. The well attended audience which consisted of workers from many parishes from Mumbai and Pune listened attentively as Fr. Joe connected the teaching of St. Mathew and St.Paul with his work in Kripa, supported by the 12 steps of Alcoholic Anonymous (AA), and GSO of Alcoholic Anonymous in reaching out to the marginalised.( Fr Joe is also a Trustee of AA India.)
The other speakers at the seminar were Fr Seraphine, Mr. Stephen Monterio & Mr. Bosco D'Souza on topics of the 12 step program of AA , the spiritual dimension of the program with life story sharing of recoveries from addiction.

Mr. Cajetan D'Souza, Archdiocesan Secretary, Christian Workers Movement in his vote of thanks, mentioned and thanked Fr Joe and his team for their valuable inputs and precious time.The feedback of participant was that there should be many more such informative programs in all parishes in the Archdiocese of Mumbai.

The seminar ended with a sumptous lunch.

Kripa's presence at the 6th National conference of FINGODAP was in large numbers with staff from North East to Mumbai.

Dr Anand Choudhury, Dr Menon and Dr Nouli presented PPT's of various subjects. A PPT by Bosco too was read out by Dr Menon.

Dr Menon and Dr Nouli were elected Executive Directors of FINGODAP. Various topics of NGO's were discussed and many new initiatives taken.

The non presence of Fr Joe was felt very much and even the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Shri Mukul Wasnik mentioned this.

The event was well organised and much applause to Dr Rajesh and Dr Zeenat of SYPM- Delhi the host of the Convention.

Kripa stall at Vasai Janhit Trust Exhibition

In accordance with an invitation from Vasai Janhit Trust, Kripa Vasai set up an exhibition stall at the St. Francis Xavier Church on 23rd October 2011.
The function was inaugurated by His Grace, Archbishop Felix Machado among other dignitaries present.
The stall was well decorated with banners, posters, pamphlets, brochures and a signature campaign. There was also a power-point show on Kripa Foundation; its activities, performance, facilities and extent of services in the field of addiction and HIV AIDS.
Many people visit the stall and interacted with the resource team. There was also a sale of work of diyas, yoga and meditation CDs.

On an official visit to the city of Mumbai Mr. Dharamlal Kaushik,the Speaker of the legislative Assembly of Chhattisgarh visited the Bailica of Our Lady of the Mount, Bandra Mumbai, after which he visited Fr. Joe's office at the mount.

Over a quarter century of service, Kripa Foundation has evolved a module of non-discriminating, supportive community living, empowering people to introspect and bring about a change in lifestyle. Rev. Fr. Joseph H Pereira is the Founder and Managing Trustee of the Kripa Foundation, which is devoted to the care, support and rehabilitation of those affected by Chemical Dependency and HIV & AIDS.
Father Joe travels the globe teaching yoga to raise funds to support the work of these rehab centres in India. There are now 64 Kripa Foundation centres that use the Twelve Step Program, yoga and meditation to help bring about necessary changes for healthy living.
Many people from Vancouver Island have studied Yoga with Father Joe. His classes, held in the Comox Valley for the past 14 years, have had wait lists for many years now. He often sings hymns from his spiritual tradition while his students practice the classical postures.
Father Joe teaches with an open hearted approach to yoga and Philosophy. The physical yoga that he teaches is challenging but tempered with a gentleness and a focus on the heart. He honours his teachers and draws on wisdom from his religion. Amongst his teachers he counts as one of the paramount influences as Mother Theresa who questioned her own religion and faith. Father Joe has studied with the Iyengar Family for over 43 years and though he has a gentle nature his methods are sometimes painfully challenging. We lay on wooden bricks for 10 -12 minutes to open our ribcage and used the edge of a chair to re-educate and stretch our cardiac muscles. This method of practicing yoga is not for everyone but has measurable benefits.
I found immediate and lasting change within my thoracic spine and ribcage after giving my trust over to this compassionate man. I can see that many conditions of our sedentary life can be reversed by this type of attention to areas of concern. The Iyengar Style of Yoga makes strong claims of rejuvenation and therapy whereas most modern yoga teachers are taught never to make claims that yoga can heal anything. I believe that faith is a component of yoga which Rev. Father Joe Pereira has integrated into his practice and teaching.

On 5th October 2011, a Navratri pooja was celebrated at Kripa Vasai amidst staff, In-house clients and Beneficiaries of VRACS.

This programme was followed by the 'Laying of the Stone', of the adjoining property that will be used as Kripa Training and Treatment Centre (KTTC). This was a much awaited event; a vision of many that has finally become a reality.

Fr. Andrew Jadhav, Resident Priest blessed the land with a prayer ritual followed by the traditional breaking of the coconut by Narendra Ambekar, Kripa Vasai.

Mr. Arjun Chhabria a Trustees of " Celebrate Bandra Trust" paid a courtesy visit to kripa Bandra, in Mumbai. Mr. Chhabria spoke with the staff in the office and later interacted with patients in the annexe , the rehab for recovering addicts.

Mr. Chhabria was touched to see the work Fr. Joe does and moved to see how peacefully all addicts live together in their rehabilitation.

This is the place which Kripa Foundation had humble begining and has now spread to over 65 facilities in 11 States of India.

In accordance with a request from the Mayor of Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation and Member of VRACS Advisory Board, Kripa Vasai took active part in the Marathon, under the theme, ‘Save a girl child’, organized by Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation.
On 18th September 2011, Staff and In-house clients set up an awareness stall at Papdy junction. The team displayed banners and posters simultaneously cheering the runners. Pamphlets were distributed and information on Addiction and HIV/ AIDS were given to those who availed of it.

The 69th birthday celebration of Fr. Joe was celebrated with great pomp and glory well organised by the staff of Kripa Bandra.

After the traditional cutting of the birthday cake by Fr Joe. songs were sung by Charmaine, Noel, Brett, Pandey, Wifred and the ever green Alan belting out oldies accompanied by Bosco. The highlight was a song sung by Fr. Joe which kept the audience spell bound. A surprise song in Portuguese by Fr. Alvaro Nazerth and a hilarious song by Fr. Peter Drego was well applauded. A German song was also sung by the guest of Fr Joe from Germany.

The gathering along with Fr Joe, accompanied by the staff and clients of Kripa, danced to their hearts content to the tunes of Aloo Sound. The Parish Fathers of Mount Carmel Church, said the Grace before meals and all dined to a well layed out table arranged by Zuber and his son along with the staff of kripa Bandra.

Indeed a program well ended with golden memories.

5 students Ms. Rima Kudukar, Ms. Simantika Choudhury, Ms. Aikita Jarrah, Ms. Shruti Balsara and Ms. Priya Wadhwa of 3rd year BMM stream of R.D. National College, Bandra, Mumbai. Conducted a days workshop at Kripa Bandra, called "Below the line " and grouped as part of their Media Planning Project, with the team name " SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED".

Art being a beautiful form of expression what people think and feel, the group titled this workshop "EXPRESSIONS". To begin with the clients at Kripa Bandra were provided with drawing and painting materials. Each client had to express through painting, their phases of life and what were their feelings.

On completing their painting, the clients were asked as to what their painting expressed. the responses and feedback of each painting was filled with emotions and moved many to tears. As per the students the seriousness, willingness and talents of the clients was very impressive. Overall this was a wonderful experience for all present.

At the end of the program, the students presented Dr Snehal Mehta 4 well designed posters in the presence of Mr. Bosco D'Souza, Mr. Steven Monterio, Fr. Seraphine and Mr. Burt.
The Kripa team assured the students that these posters will be used for outreach awareness programs all over the country.

The clients were very happy to be exposed to such a program and expressed their feelings to have such programs in the near future on regular intervals.

11th September 2011 drew a large crowd at Dharavi, being the last day of immersion of the elephant god. The Kripa Street Children Project; staff and children included, took the opportunity to reach out to the community by putting up a water stall, where large numbers of community members could avail of this facility.

Display of Banners and IEC Materials were put up at strategic points and there were many people who also availed of information given by the team. Pamphlets on the various aspects of addiction were also distributed.

Kripa Vasai commemorated the 64th Independence Day on 15th August 2011 at the centre itself. Clients and Staff gathered in the grounds and reverently stood to attention as the flag was hoisted.
Mr. Santosh Walvaikar, Member of the Health Committee, Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation was the Guest of Honour and gave a motivating speech. In-house clients also presented speeches on ‘Freedom from Addiction & Drugs’.
Tournaments were arranged for the clients and staff as part of the entertainment programme and gifts were presented to all.
A sumptuous lunch was arranged by the kitchen staff and a few clients.

On 15th August, Fr Joe celebrated the Holy Eucharist in Thanksgiving to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Kripa at the 9.30 am service in Mount Carmel's, Bandra. The mass was concelebrated by Fr Bill ( from the U. S. of A ) our Kripa ambassador in the West who completed 50 years of his priesthood, accompanied by Fr Seraphine. Mr. Francis Fernandes conducted the choir at the service.The mass was well attended by Kripa staff from all over the country, along with well wishers and parishioners of Mount Carmel Church.

Immediately after the Eucharistic service, well wishers, patients and staff collected in the Kripa annexe to felicitate Fr. Bill. The program commenced with the cutting of a cake, after which Fr Joe spoke about his association with Fr Bill for the past 24 years. Mr. Joey Carvalho from Goa was the next to speak, and shared his experience and fondness for Fr Bill. In his reply Fr. Bill shared his gratitude to Fr. Joe, and mentioned how Kripa was a home to him in India. Few of the staff, well wishers and patients entertained the gathering with their songs. The program was also graced by Mr. and Mrs. Ajay and Rishita Agrawal of Nagpur.

Light refreshments were served and later a sumptuous lunch.

The AOSM Statement of Purpose

The primary purpose of the Asia-Oceania Service Meeting (AOSM) is to carry the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to the alcoholic who still suffers.
The Asia-Oceania Service Meeting seeks ways to accomplish this goal by providing a forum for the delegates to share the experience, strength and hope of the countries they represent and who come together from all parts of Asia and Oceania .
It can also represent an expression of the Group Conscience throughout the region and provide a link to the World Service Meeting for countries unable to be represented there.
Experience has shown that. a sound service structure enables the message to be delivered more effectively. The Asia-Oceania Service Meeting encourages the planning of sound Structures suited to the needs of the individual countries and the expansion of A.A. services to reach the alcoholic through the spoken word, literature and institutions work. The AOSM recognizes that it has no authority over any A.A. service or group. The only decisions to be made by the AOSM are those which affect the meeting itself.
This year the 9th AOSM meeting was held in Chandigarh, India. Fr Joe addressed the meeting as Class A Trustee of GSO India.

Mr. Khan spoke about the ill effects of drugs and mentioned the latest rave party arrest in Khopoli, Maharashtra, where young girls and boys were trapped using drugs.
There was a slogan and spot quizz competition held for the students to which trophies and certificates were distributed to the winners.
Due to the heavy downpour of rain the program was held indoors, however the spirit of the children were not dampen and along with the guest of honors they walked in the rain through the narrow lanes of Dharavi shouting and displaying slogans on the bad effects of drug abuse, at the end of the rally the children were served soft drinks with refreshments.
It was a well organised program by the staff of Kripa Dharavi under the leadership of Deepak, Rajan,Praveen,Shabana and Salma, guided by Dr. Sashi Menon. The vote of thanks on behalf of Fr. Joe Pereira and Kripa Foundation was done by Rajan welingkar staff of Kripa Dharavi.

In collaboration with Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Kripa Assam organised programs on International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 26th June 2011 in various parts of the city, Kripa In-house clients, staff and students from Assam University conducted street plays on evils of addiction and other related topics..
Later that evening, a meeting was organised by Department of Social Welfare in association with Kripa Assam. Shri Akon Bora, Minister of Social Welfare was present for the program along with other dignitaries of the state. Project Director of Kripa Assam delivered the vote of thanks.

Kripa Vasai organised programs on the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 24th, 25th and 27th June 2011 in five different locations of Vasai Taluka.
On 24th June, an awareness programme was conducted for around 450 students of G.J. Vartak School, Vasai Station. The programme consisted of Street Play performed by the In-house clients and staff; depicting the evils of addiction, affected family members and role of the counsellor. Life Sharing and Question- Answer session, Distribution and Display of IEC Materials were other activities of the programme.
On 25th June 2011 and 27th June, the entire programme was repeated at Evershine City: Diwan Market, Evershine Circle and Vasant Nagri, and G.G. College, Vasai respectively with an inclusion of a Signature Campaign. The number of participants was around 250 passersby in Evershine City and 300 Students of the school.

"THINK HEALTH -NOT DRUGS"

On the occasion of International Day against Drug abuse & illicit trafficking. Kripa Foundation in association with Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) and The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment conducted a program for students of 9th and 10th standards, from the vicinity of Bandra, at St Aloysius High School Hall.

Keeping in mind the theme for this year “Think Health- Not Drugs”, the program commenced with the lighting of the lamp by the Guest of Honors Fr. William Athaide, Parish Priest of Mount Carmel Church, Mr. C Fernandes and Mr. Khan of NCB, Mr. Sanjay Godekar of MSJE, and staff of Kripa Foundation Dr S. Mehta, Dr. Sujata Nair, Ms. Krishna Iyer and Fr. Seraphine.

Mr. Fernandes and Mr. Khan of NCB in their address to the students stated, that NCB would support Kripa Foundation in their battle against chemical dependency and pledge their full support to this cause. Mr. Godekar of MSJE mentioned that Kripa Foundation was one of the largest and best NGO in the field of chemical dependency.

A play on the harmful effects of drug abuse was enacted by the patients and staff of Kripa Bandra, which was well applauded. A poster painting competition was held, and trophies and certificates were given to the best 3 posters. Dr. Snehal Mehta and team presented a rose and a memento to each guest on behalf of Fr. Joe and the Kripa Family.

The children on their part pledged that they would carry this message of the harmful effects of drugs on health back to their schools and homes.

Bosco D’souza compered and gave the vote of thanks on behalf of Kripa Foundation. Those present were served refreshments and cold drinks. The program ended with the singing of the National Anthem.

A weekend yoga was conducted by Fr. Joe at an old Baroque monastery of St. Peter' in the Black Forest, Germany. The day would commence with the morning meditation, followed by a walk in the Black Forest and practice of yoga. On one of such walks, Fr. Joe visited the Kneipp cold water basin, where he demonstrated asana's for the heart. The evening would end with the celebration of the Eucharist followed by a singing session. It was a real experience to do yoga in these huge princely rooms and dine in the ancient hall. The place had great serenity and calmness and it was a joy to do this weekend yoga organised by Ludwig, after a five day retreat with Fr Joe, organised by Silvia Maria. The weekend was a great learning and soul searching experience under the teachings and guidance of Fr. Joe. Thank You Fr. Joe.

Focus on Drug Abuse Prevention in schools, in Nagaland

KOHIMA, JUN 17: There are around 27000 Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) in Nagaland, excluding oral drug users, as per a survey conducted by the Nagaland State AIDS Control Society. There is no available statistic on alcoholics, but it has been estimated that the number of drug users and alcoholics in Nagaland would cross a minimum total of 50,000 drug abusers and alcoholics.

These were highlighted during the one-day Orientation Workshop on Drug Abuse Prevention for Heads of School Institutions held at Millennium Hotel today. Looking at the long prevailing issues of students’ indulgence in use of Gateway Drugs such as Inhalants including Dendrite, Erasex, Gutka, Alcohol etc, the consultative meeting aimed at identifying roles and responsibilities of educational institutions and working towards initiating Drug Abuse Prevention in schools.
In drawing a comprehensive action plan strategies to mainstream Drug Abuse Prevention programmes into educational institutions, the workshop suggested that schools should identify users according to its own suitable method as a first step towards prevention of drug abuse.
It also strongly endorsed the need for a counselor in every school but keeping in mind that this would depend on the proprietor of the school for private schools, it suggested on impressing upon the government to fund a counselor for every school as it does for Hindi Teachers.
It further suggested that a section of schools be allotted for display of all necessary information related to tobacco, drugs, etc, as well as to dedicate a day in a month to discuss the matter with the students and do necessary surveys to find out the status of the problem. The involvement of students was also necessitated in order to find a solution towards this goal besides seminars and trainings for teachers and parents.
Also voicing concern for the failure of strict implementation with regard to the sale of tobacco within 100 yards of school premises, the schools representatives pointed out that, although it is banned, shops sell it and students buy it. While a fine of Rs. 1000/- is being imposed on the shops caught selling tobacco products, it was reasoned that if they can make a profit of Rs.5000, losing Rs.1000 is still not a loss. This has been observed as a major problem in all the schools.
Earlier, Abou Mere, Director of Kripa Foundation,Nagaland stating that Nagaland is passing through a turbulent period in its history, the transition from a traditional tribal society to a modern technological culture, lamented that homes and families do not discuss values anymore. He pointed out that the major reasons why people abuse drugs is availability and easy accessibility, parents not providing quality time, increase in peer pressure and low capacity to cope with life/stress respectively.
He said this is impacting us in respect of health by causing premature deaths and side effects besides producing school and college dropouts, loss of working hours and productivity, increase in crime and economy.
He also informed that Hepatitis C among IDUs is more than 20%, which he noted is much more alarming than the prevalence rate of HIV.
The Director further said a study done by Kripa Foundation & UNODC H-13 in Kohima with 250 Drug users showed that Rs.180 Crores is going out of the State annually taking into account the daily expense of a drug addict and alcoholics (this excludes local brew as the money generated from it circulates within the State).
Strongly pointing out that drug or alcohol abuse is a disease, he impressed upon the schools on creating awareness on drug hazards by promoting youth friendly activities and not just regular academic classes through seminars, trainings and workshops on life skills and social issues, counselling of students and family members, taking part in community events and referral for counselling.
Meanwhile, Dr. P Ngully, Chairman, of Kripa Foundation in Nagaland, asserted that drug abuse is a social problem which has to be addressed together.
Referring to a study on drug abuse conducted in the urban area in Nagaland, he said 80% are in the age group of 20-30 years while 96% are above secondary level. 47.3% are employed while a worrying factor is the age of first use at 19, accounting for 86.5% in this regard. 60.8% of them attributed the cause of addiction to curiosity while 47.2% was because of peer pressure and 52.6% showed secondary addiction including gambling, sex and womanizing. He said that the criminal record before treatment stands at 25.6% according to the study while it showed improvement by coming down to 15% after first relapse. The Regional Resource & Training Centre - North East II covers the states of Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh and is supported by National Institute of Social Defence, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment Govt. of India and managed by Kripa Foundation, Nagaland.

Kohima June 17 : Alarmed by the high rate use of tobacco in Nagaland, especially by School children in and around Kohima, the need to minimize the trends has been highlighted at the “Orientation and Sensitization Workshop on Drug Abuse Prevention & Voluntary Blood Donation” for educational institutions held today, at Hotel Millennium. After thorough deliberation, the workshop came up with some action plan, which will be forwarded to Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, the department concerned and educational institutions.
The Action Plan included schools to identify the users according to its suitable method, to train a counselor (train a teacher with less work, where that particular teacher should also abstain from all kinds of tobacco products and related things), section of school allotted to display all necessary information related to tobacco, drugs etc., a day in a month should be dedicated to discuss the matter with the students and do the necessary survey to find about the status of the problem, involve the students and to solve the problems through them, to conduct awareness programme for teachers and parents and to impress the government to sponsor or appoint full fledged counselor in each school to maintain good health.
The participants held a series of discussion trying to understand the prevailing issues of students’ indulgence in use of gateway Drugs such as inhalants (Dentrite, Erasex, Gutka, Alcohol etc) to curb the issue in the institution with proper co-ordination. Many concerned teachers pointed out on the use of gutka by the students which is indeed a tough task for them to put an end besides countless warnings.
Earlier, Abou Mere Director, Kripa Foundation highlighted on drug abuse scenario of Kohima district. Basing on research done by Kripa Foundation, he said as the problem further compounded, it was confirmed that HIV cases had been detected among the Injecting Drug Users in 1990 where Manipur and Nagaland is among the six HIV high prevalent states in India. Nagaland HIV prevalence rate stand approximately 0.78 percent, to 1.5 percent (reduced from 35%) due to intervention of various civil societies and large scale awareness campaign. Economically, assuming 50,000 drug abusers & alcoholics in Nagaland, Mere said the state spend Rs. 180 crores annually on drugs and alcohol products.
Highlighting on drug abuse prevention activities by NSID/MSJE Dr. P.Ngullie, chairman, Kripa Foundation maintained that according to the Study on Drug Abuse there are 74 Respondents in urban area between the age group from 20 – 30 years and educational level remains 96% above secondary. Stating that it is not easy to change a person who is into addiction, however Ngullie added that Kripa foundation is giving its best effort to normalize their life. Basing on reports he also asserted that the causes of addiction predominantly happens due to curiosity (60.8%), peer pressure (47.2%), 52.6% showed secondary addiction (gambling, sex, womanizing) and the cause of relapse takes place due to personal problem (37.8%), peer pressure (33.7%), loneliness (31.1 %), frustration (27%), curiosity (25.6%) still continue to “hang around” with using friends after treatment 48.7% . There are also some reasons for taking Treatment which may be because the person is willing to give up which was found (56.7%) and family pressure (24.3%).11, Ngullie said.

School teachers representing private institutions in Kohima district on Friday collaborated to take up preventive measures on drug abuse among students community.
The key issues heading their action plan included conducting of a one day seminar for teachers on sensitization of drug abuse prevention and including drug abuse prevention programmes in their school’s events calendar.
Discussing this during a sensitization workshop on drug abuse conducted by the Regional Resource and Training Centre (RRTC)NE-II along with All Nagaland Private Schools Association Kohima Unit, it was decided that RRTC would initiate in conducting sensitization programme for teachers in private schools in Kohima starting from the current year.
This system module would be further carried out to other districts, the RRTC assured.
The participants also proposed for a counseling training programme to be given to representative from each school.
Having felt the importance of counseling in schools, the teachers also decided to impress upon the government to sponsor a full-fledged counselor to schools.
Further to sensitize students, it was proposed that a day in a month be dedicated to discuss matters of drug abuse with students and let students take involve in finding solutions to it.
Speaking on drug abuse prevention activities carried by National Institute of Social Defense, chairman of Kripa Foundation Dr. P. Ngully said that there are 11 RRTCs in the country, RRTC NE-II being one of the centres covering 10 rehab centres in Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
He informed that role of RRTC NE-II include training of service providers, research and documentation, human resource development and IEC development, networking and advocacy, Drug Abuse Monitoring Systems (DAMS) etc.
Dr. Ngully further asserted that the RRTC was trying to decriminalize drug addicts, saying that addiction is a disease. While mentioning that the most vulnerable age for drug abuse was between the age of 20-30 years, Dr. Ngully said that proper and humanitarian form of be taken to rehabilitate them.
Speaking on drug scenario in Nagaland, director of Kripa Foundation Abou Mere said that Nagaland was passing through a turbulent period in its history, the transition from a traditional tribal society to a modern technological culture, and the people becoming vulnerable to drugs. He pointed out that availability and easy accessibility of drugs, lack of family quality time, pressure and low capacity to cope with life stress were some of the reasons leading to drug abuse.
To curb the ill-affects of addiction, Abou Mere stated that schools should create awareness of drug hazards, promote youth friendly activities like trainings and workshops on life skill and social issues besides academic classes, counseling therapy to students and family members, participation of students in community events.
The programme was sponsored by National Institute of Social Defense, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

No Smoking Day

Kripa Vasai declared 13th May 2011 as a No Smoking Day in the premises itself. This was initiated by the in-house clients with motivation from the centre manager and Rob Harris; a yoga enthusiast during his visit to the centre.
The experiment was a huge success with all clients decreasing their intake and a few quitting altogether. There was also a request from the clients to declare every ‘Friday’ henceforth as a No Smoking Day.
In continuum, World No Tobacco Day was commemorated on 31st May 2011 in the centre itself. There was a display of banners and posters. The counsellors motivated the clients to quit tobacco, nicotine and there was positive feedback from them. Tournaments were arranged for the in-house clients and staff and the winners and participants were presented with gifts.

Kripa Foundation Bandra organised an awareness progam at the recently held Rink Hockey Tournament, organised on it's turf by Mount Carmel's Church.Bandra, Mumbai.
A number of well known teams from across the country participated in this event, naming a few like Air-India, Central Railway, Union Bank and many local schools and clubs. Kripa Foundation also participated in the tournament., although we lost 10-2 against hockey giants Customs.Throughout the match the spectators and cheer leaders kept encouraging the Kripa team. Every game was played with a lot of zeal and sportsmanship.
To observe World No-Tobacco Day, Kripa Bandra, organised an Awareness Programme, on the ill-effects of smoking and the use of Tobacco at the tournament.
It was a great evening as the participating hockey teams supported the cause and joined by a huge crowd of spectators canvased for the campaign. Fr.Seraphine concluded the event with a brief talk on the bad effects of Tobacco use.

Kripa Pune organized a program for patients, staff and outsiders on the occasion of “ WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY”. An poster exhibition on ill-heath of tobacco use was displayed. After having viewing the posters and identifying from the sharing’s of Ravi D, Yallapa, Rama, Dhabhade and Sarang who are tobacco free, many in-patients of Kripa promised to quit tobacco. To honor their gesture, Mr. Rama tied ribbons on their wrist as a reminder to keep their promises.

Mohalla Committee concept was a brainchild of police officer Mr. Khopade, who first-hand witnessed the Hindu Muslim riots in 1992-93 in Bhivandi.Mumbai, a backlash of the Babri Masjid demolition. He witnessed how rumors spread, how people with malicious self-interest took advantage of the situation, how the communities segregated and how it all evantually lead to complete breakdown of law and order. And then he came up with an excellent idea. Mohalla Committee. A group of citizen closely working with cops on continuous basis.
This group meets regularly, every month or so. The main emphasis is on proactive activities to diffuse tension and keep communication. This helps reduce rumors spreading. This prevents people with vested interests from taking advantage of the situation. Since the establishment of Mohalla Committee, the Hindu Muslim tension in Bhivandi has reduced considerably.
Today Mohalla Committees exist all over Mumbai. These groups meet regularly with local police. They keep track of crime statistics. They keep track of local miscreants. They have a record of emergency services in the area, doctors, hospitals, ambulances. They organize joint petrols in the sensitive areas.
However in a village in Khed, District Sindudurg, Maharashtra, Fr. Joe was invited to speak at a unique Mohalla committe which is in existence for more than 3 generations.The people of this village have a strong sense of brotherhood and both Muslims and Hindus live in great harmony. The most amazing part at this meeting was the mentioning of Christ, Ram, Rahim taken by people outside their faiths.
Fr. Joe spoke on the ill healths of addiction and HIV/AIDS. and the teachings of Christ. Fr. Joe later sang the song by Vinobha Bhave in which it sings praises of the Higher Powers of all religions, which amazed everyone and was well appauled at the end. Fr. Joe has been invited by the people in Khed to start a centre , as they have been badly effected by alcoholism.
This committee consists of local Hindu and Muslim heads, local civil authorities, Bank managers, police patil and prominent businessmen.

More than 2000 Children Living with HIV AIDS and Orphans are in poor physical and mental condition. These children need psycho social support as they suffer from stigma and discrimination. Financial constraints have deprived them of their rights to development along with poor health conditions. They also suffer due to lack of health care, education and social support.

With this in mind, Kripa Imphal organised a Summer Camp for around 35-40 children; orphans and Children Living with HIV AIDS from 03rd to 6th May 2011 at DSSS to provide a cheerful atmosphere and also to explore their hidden talents.

The valedictory function was conducted in the presence of His Grace, Archbishop Joseph Mittathani, Hon. Minister of Health, Mr. Jayenta Singh, Mr. Abraham, JD,TI, MSACS, Ms. Rojnara, NACO, Fr. Joe Pereira, Managing Trustee, Kripa Foundation and Chief Functionaries from various NGOs.

The camp was conducted successfully with fun, recreation specially designed for the children. Various sessions like Art of Living, Self Therapy was conducted by experts and the children were also provided with high nutrition food.
